Brockwell Junior School seeks to meet the individual needs of every child in order for them to fully develop their potential and to remove any barriers which may prevent them reaching their potential. Disadvantaged learners remain at the heart of everything we do, and all staff are committed to supporting these children throughout their time at Brockwell.

Financial Support

Children in receipt of Free School meals receive comprehensive financial support to allow them to take part in every aspect of school life. We firmly believe children from low-income families should be able to access every opportunity offered by the school.

The support that Free School Meals learners – or any child in need – can access includes:

  • Book bags and Logo uniform for children starting in Year 3

  • Free breakfast  available from Before School Club from 8.15am

  • A free lunchtime meal including salad bar and drink

  • Discounted instrumental lessons through the Derbyshire Music Partnership

  • Clubs or visits at no cost

Supporting the Progress of Disadvantaged Students

Research shows that disadvantaged children from across the country are more likely to underachieve. We are determined that our disadvantaged children receive everything they need to be successful at school. Every teacher is a teacher of disadvantaged children and is responsible for the progress of Pupil Premium learners in their care.

To substantiate our belief in quality first teaching benefiting the most disadvantaged, our staff have  periods of directed time to allow for inclusive planning, assessment and support for disadvantaged learners.

As an example, multiplication tables is a focus this year, and lower school is implementing strategies that will help those who struggle with tables to do their best.

It is important to our successful partnership to get to know our children and families very well. We are keen to work with you to:

  • Ensure that meeting the basic needs of your child is a priority, including having a sense of security;
  • Ensure that a broad curriculum with many opportunities results in your child achieving well;
  • Ensure that high expectations and excellent quality teaching are the norm;
  • Use assessment and data information positively to ensure interventions are targeted towards specific children and are effective.

We  publish online information about how we have used the Pupil Premium.

At the end of each financial  year we review the impact of the funding as we plan to use the following year’s grant. We also review the impact of how we allocated our Pupil Premium funding at the end of the academic year to consider the impact on outcomes and in particular the difference in achievement between those eligible and those that were not. This ensures it represents both value for money and has played a direct role in helping pupils to reach their full potential, both academically and socially.
